Harplands, Staffordshire

Carillion was responsible for the design, construction, equipping and commissioning of Harplands Hospital, a new £23 million, 148-bed Acute Psychiatric Unit. We now operate non-clinical facilities on behalf of North Staffordshire NHS Trust under a 29-year concession.

As a high security Psychiatric Hospital, treating people with conditions ranging from depression and suicidal tendencies to drug addiction, Harplands required special, yet discreet, safety measures to protect patients, visitors, staff and the local community. At the same time, it was essential to create an environment that would be viewed as relaxed and friendly by all concerned.

Our fast-track construction programme delivered a single storey, accessible building with a spacious and welcoming interior. Close liaison with clinicians and the NHS resulted in shorter care pathways and enhanced support services throughout the hospital, which also features innovative waste management and recycling initiatives, including the monitoring of energy and water use.
