The Far East
Castles like Himeji in Japan were built about 450 years ago by nobles called daimyos. Paths into these types of castles - built internally using wooden frames covered by plaster to protect it from fire - had up to ten gates which slowed down enemies so they could be shot at! The people of China and Japan believed that buildings should copy nature's shapes and so they used curved roofs and planned beautiful rooftop gardens. They also had to ensure their buildings could withstand earthquakes, heavy rain and typhoons.

In Ancient China, often attacked by raiders, nobles built walls to keep them out and around 2,100 years ago they were all joined together to create the Great Wall of China, which even today is the only man made building visible from space.
