Carillion collects five star health and safety award

07/02/2006

Support services and construction company Carillion has achieved the prestigious British Safety Council Five Star Health and Safety Award for its Waterquarter development in Cardiff.

The award was given following a comprehensive health and safety audit of site safety systems and practices. The Five Star award is one of the highest given by the British Safety Council and one of the hardest to achieve for a construction site, due to the relatively short time period of the project.

The Waterquarter is a £20.5m scheme for George Wimpey City Ltd, comprising 198 luxury residential apartments overlooking Bute Town Dock in Cardiff Bay. Carillion began construction in October 2004 and the apartments will be handed over in phases between February and August 2006.

To achieve the Five Star award, a score greater than 92 per cent must be achieved based on 60 predefined sections divided into the five categories of safety organisation, management control systems, fire control systems, accident/incident/near miss reporting, and workplace implementation. Carillion achieved 4,186 points out of a maximum of 4,445, giving a score of over 94 per cent.

Carillion safety and sustainability director, Neil Maycock, said: “We are delighted to have achieved this prestigious award which recognises the effectiveness of our on-site Health and Safety systems and management. Carillion is completely committed to the Health and Safety of its employees and those who could be affected by our work, and this award reflects our ongoing efforts to achieve our target of zero accidents by 2010.”

Waterquarter project manager Nigel Banks collected the award during a presentation ceremony at Trinity House in London on February 2.
