Carillion sponsors winning pupil

05/05/2006

Support services and construction company Carillion has held a competition to sponsor a senior school pupil through university and into his first job. Anton Young, from St Brendan’s High School in Renfrewshire, won the award which includes sponsorship throughout university, vacation employment, bursary and a job upon successful graduation.

The competition was run by Carillion’s £100m Renfrewshire Schools PPP project team, with the support of Renfrewshire Council, and was open to all secondary school pupils in the area. The idea came about through the team’s close liaison with local schools and the students’ subsequent interest in careers in construction.

The competitors took part in several demanding challenges including producing a pen picture CV and attending an interview. The seven final candidates then gave a presentation at a judging session held at the Glynhill Hotel. Two runners up received iPods and offers of vacation employment and the other candidates all received iPods and Carillion goodies.

David Liming, Carillion National Building’s managing director, said: “We are delighted to be able to offer this great opportunity to Anton, who is a really outstanding pupil and should do very well in his chosen career of Quantity Surveying. Carillion is a major employer of graduates and we tailor our training programmes to individual needs and goals, with support and coaching provided by personal mentors. I would like to thank all the pupils who took part in the competition and wish them all the best for the future.”
