BSS delivers exam success for Carillion
22/08/2005
British Safety Services has successfully delivered NEBOSH National General Certificate training for directors and senior management of construction and services company Carillion. The training was undertaken as part of Carillon’s commitment to excellence in health and safety and forms part of their ‘Target Zero’ safety campaign.
Both BSS and Carillion are now celebrating after 16 directors and managers from Carillon’s building business, based in Wolverhampton, achieved a 100% pass rate with more than 80% achieving a credit or distinction. The results were higher than the national standard pass rate (29%).
Pat McLoughlin, managing director of BSS, said, “We are delighted that such a high profile company are leading by example and using our services to reinforce their health and safety ethos.”
Tony Lenehan, managing director of Carillion Building, considers it money well spent. He says, “The specialised training will give us more credibility and knowledge to put to good effect. I have been very impressed with the commitment of our senior management and their willingness to be examined alongside their peer group.”
Barry Quatermass, IMS director of Carillion Building, responsible for health and safety said, “Our safety campaign, Target Zero, aims to completely eradicate all accidents from our sites by 2010. Training our directors and senior and project managers to a very high degree of health and safety competence is fundamental to us achieving this goal”.
“We chose BSS because we have worked with them for a number of years and they know and understand our business and are able to deliver what we need. We were also conscious of their high student success rate, with 87 percent of NEBOSH students passing first time.”
He continued, “For us, good health and safety is not about winning work, but it is good corporate governance and helps us to fulfil the culture we are trying to establish. We can’t be a truly great organisation until we have great health and safety performance as a fundamental part of living our values.”
To extend the awareness and understanding in the organisation, Carillion intends to run a further programme with BSS in the autumn to get 300 project directors, project managers and project staff through their training. BSS look forward to helping Carillion towards similar levels of success.
