Budding engineers get a glimpse of the future

12/02/04

Engineers of the future got a chance to experience the workings of a real building site when they visited the new Morrisons Supermarket in Wetherby, which is currently being built by business and construction services company, Carillion.

Seventy pupils from Crossley St Primary School in Wetherby had been learning about buildings in their art classes, so Carillion jumped at the chance to offer them a real-life experience of a construction project. A tour of the building was followed by the judging of an art competition where the children had painted their ideas of what a Morrisons store should look like.

Wetherby mayor, Roger Bealey, was on hand to judge the pictures and hand out prizes. The painting competition had three categories and the Reception year winner was Oliver Butterworth age 5, Year 1 winner was Sian Pinnington age 6, and the winner of the Year 2 prize was Olivia Young age 7, all three winners are from Wetherby.

Carillion started building the supermarket in May last year after carrying out the demolition of the old store. Due for completion at the end of February, the new store will provide around 350 jobs. The building has feature stonework on the outside to blend in with local architecture. This will be the fifth Morrisons supermarket that Carillion has built since 1999.
