Carillion marks safety milestone with charity donation

06/05/2004

Support services and construction company Carillion has handed over a cheque for £5,000 to charity, to mark its excellent safety record at its NV Buildings site in Manchester.

Carillion, developers Countryside Properties and trade contractors on the site of the residential development at Salford Quays, have presented a cheque to the Lighthouse Club – a charity that benefits injured construction workers and their families.

The donation, made up of contributions from Carillion, Countryside Properties and trade contractors on site (including Elland Steel, Heyrod, J&J Kitchens, Cadman, SG Aluminium, W Maher, Briggs, Q Floor, A&B, SKM, Benchmark and Riley Metalwork), is to mark the achievement of over 400,000 contractor accident free manhours on the project.

Carillion project manager Steve White said: “Health and safety is the number one priority for Carillion and we are totally committed to producing a culture of safe working practices on all of our sites.

“We have enjoyed an excellent safety record on site and in recognition of this decided to mark the achievement by making a donation to charity and I would like to extend heartfelt thanks to our client Countryside Properties and all the subcontractors who have contributed so generously.”

Eddie Wildes, Secretary of the Lighthouse Club (North West Branch) said: “This is a fantastic achievement by Carillion and all the site workers. They and their colleagues across the industry are the ones who will ultimately benefit from this donation to the Lighthouse Club.”

Located on the waterfront at the former Dock 9, Salford Quays, work started on the NV Buildings in March 2003 and is scheduled for completion in Spring 2006. Situated opposite the Lowry Centre, the project comprises three 18-storey residential blocks, each containing 82 luxury apartments.
