Carillion wins a clutch of Safety awards

27/05/2005

Support services and construction company Carillion has scooped a clutch of awards for its ongoing commitment to Health and Safety.

Carillion Building has been awarded a RoSPA (Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents) Gold award for its Health and Safety performance in 2004. RoSPA awards are given in recognition of good performance, and this is the 28th such award received by Carillion Building since 1999. To win, entrants must produce evidence of good Health and Safety management systems, and demonstrate an improving or continuously good accident / injury performance over the assessment period.

Carillion Services has picked up a RoSPA Silver award for its Defra (Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs) North West contract, and a Bronze award for its Defra North East contract. It also received two British Safety Council International Safety Awards – one for Carillion Services as a whole, and one for its Service Channel contract for Telewest. In addition, BSI has recommended Carillion Services for certification to the OHSAS 18001 standard for “Occupational Health and Safety management systems”.

PME, Carillion’s recently acquired M&E maintenance and building services business, has won RoSPA awards in three different categories. These include the Management of Occupational Road Risk category, Highly Commended in the Facilities Management Sector category, and Commended in the Training category. PME has also won its fifth consecutive award in this year’s British Safety Council's International Safety Award.

At the Building Health and Safety Awards in May, Carillion won the Public Safety Initiative category for the innovative Disruption Management Plan developed for its Renfrewshire Schools PPP project. Carillion was also shortlisted in the following categories: Building Contractor’s Safety Initiative, Best Site Facilities, and Integrated Project Safety.

Neil Maycock, Carillion’s Director for Safety said: “It is a great achievement to have won these awards, and a real recognition of Carillion’s commitment to reducing accidents and improving our safety record. 2004 saw the launch of our ‘Target Zero’ initiative, whereby we have pledged to get down to zero accidents by 2010. The campaign slogan is ‘Don’t Walk By. Take Action Now’ - a call for immediate action when any potential hazards are noticed. Target Zero has worked very well so far, and we are beginning to see it impacting on our accidents. Hopefully these awards will provide a further incentive to spur us on to even greater success.”
