Carillion constructing three ASDA superstores

15/03/2005

Support services and construction company Carillion has negotiated three contracts to build new ASDA superstores, with a total value of over £45m. A store in Lowestoft started on site in December and projects in Milton Keynes and Cannock begin in March.

The £14.5m Lowestoft project includes the demolition of an existing shipyard, the formation of a new perimeter sea wall and construction of an ASDA store and separate retail units. The site partially extends into the existing harbour and will require 490m of new steel piled perimeter sea wall with site levels lifted for future flood conditions. The scheme includes parking for 600 cars and is scheduled for completion in November 2005.

The £19m Milton Keynes project will be an ASDA Wal-Mart supercentre with an area of approximately 14,000 sq m and 800 parking spaces. The store is in the centre of Milton Keynes adjacent to the new MK Dons football stadium. The £10m Cannock store follows a £4.5m enabling works contract involving the construction of new youth and community centres and the extension and refurbishment of a school.

Carillion’s retail director Paul Kelly said: “Carillion is committed to supporting ASDA’s long term development strategy in the UK through our reputation for delivering challenging projects within a short programme period. We are constantly looking at ways we can add value to ASDA in delivering its ongoing construction programme, and ASDA’s willingness to embrace new industry approaches and ideas has enabled us to respond more effectively.

“We are also focused on creating a safe environment in which the development and construction process can take place, and recently helped ASDA launch ‘ASDA’s Way of Working’, a Health and Safety guide to working on its sites. Carillion played a major part in developing the guidance document, and we are proud of achieving the highest average Health & Safety audit scores out of ASDA’s four main partnering contractors.”
